"Lie down" or "put"?
Wrong pronunciation of words can spoilimpression of the most intelligent person. Therefore, literacy of speech should be given the same attention as its appearance. Speech errors are often quite typical for the majority. Therefore, it is only necessary to remember the correct pronunciation of certain words once in order not to get into embarrassing situations any more. One of such typical mistakes is the use of the word "lie down" in speech. Choosing between how to say: "lay down" or "put", for some reason, many choose the first option. It is not right!
"To lie down" or "to put": how correctly to speak? Remember simply: the verb "to lie down" in modern Russian does not exist. This is an archaic form, which is now used only with prefixes and only in the meaning of the action:
- already done in the past ("I put a pencil on the table");
- or the one that will be committed in the future ("I'll put the keys under the mat").
By the way, the word "poklast" does not exist either. The verb "to put", unlike the case considered above, is used just without prefixes!
