The city of Volgodonsk is located in the south-eastern part of the Rostov region, in the very south of Russia on the shore of the Tsimlyansk reservoir.

The very name of the city speaks of the importance of waterways connecting the city with neighboring southern regions. So the city communicates with the White, Baltic, Caspian, Azov and Black Seas. An important role in this is assigned to the Don Trunk Canal.

Volgodonsk is also favorably located relativelyother major settlements, the main among which are the cities with a million population of Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don. But other cities are relatively near: Elista, Stavropol and Krasnodar.

The Rostov city (Volgodonsk) nuclear power plant remains the most important energy structure of the city, which, among other things, is also a city-forming enterprise.
