A cone is a geometric three-dimensional figure obtained by combining all the rays emanating from the vertex of the cone and passing through a flat surface.

The segments that connect the vertex of the cone and the points of the circle of its base are usually called generators.

Each cone rests on the base and has a lateral surface.

Additional definitions

A straight cone is a figure whoseThe segment connecting the base to the vertex is perpendicular to the base. Such a cone is a body that is obtained as a result of the rotation of a right triangle around an axis represented by one of the legs.

The tangent plane of this figure is one of thepossible cross-sections of each cone, which passes through the generator and is perpendicular to the axis. The plane, which is parallel to the base of the figure, cuts off from it a smaller cone. The part remaining as a result of this action is a truncated cone.

A straight cone is by no means the only known figure. In addition to the circle, at its base can lie:

  • ellipse;
  • parabola;
  • hyperbola.

The last two figures form complex cones,which are characterized by an infinite volume. In inclined shapes, the projection of the vertex onto the base does not lie at the center of symmetry. The angle of the cone solution lies between two generators of the figure located opposite to each other.
