How to connect the engine to 220?

When carrying out repair work is often requiredconnection of a three-phase electric motor to a 220 volt network. This is usually associated with the use in domestic conditions of electric emery, circular saw, concrete mixer and other powerful appliances. However, it is not recommended to connect to a normal electrical network in this data sheet. What to do in such cases? A three-phase electric motor can be connected to the 220 V electric network in several ways.

Scheme "Star"

The launch of current waves will occur gradually and continue to act quite weakly. This does not always allow you to achieve the maximum necessary power for some types of equipment.

Connection method

  1. Two phase windings of the electric motor must be connected to a single-phase network.
  2. The third winding is connected to the network wire through the working capacitor.

The "Triangle" scheme

When connecting this way, the motorsyour equipment will run at full capacity. But this, in turn, is fraught with damage to the insulation of the wires. Therefore, the combined connection is most often used.

Connection method

  1. Determine whether the wires belong to the phases of the winding.
  2. Connect the third phase winding through the capacitor to the terminal of the second phase winding.

The "Star-Triangle" scheme

When the motor starts, the first current flowsmove smoothly with a gradual increase in speed. When the electric motor starts to work at full power, the automatic switching to the "Triangle" scheme takes place. It is carried out with the help of a starting time relay, magnetic starters or a batch switch.

Connection method: the ends of three-phase windings are connected together at one point.

Connection via capacitor

Connecting a three-phase motor to a 220V networkcan be carried out through a capacitor. This device is a capacity for collecting and storing electrical energy and transferring it further along the circuit in a safer mode. The power with this connection will decrease. You can say that you will not use a three-phase, but a two-phase motor. If this power is not enough to operate your equipment, it is better to use a capacitor connection.

Correct selection of capacitors

The selection of capacitors should be made as follows:

  • The power of this unit should be 1.5 times smaller than that of the motor (otherwise it is fraught with voltage jumps at switching on and off, which leads to burnout of the capacitor);
  • It is better to use metal-paper capacitors or, in extreme cases, electrolytic, soldered with diodes;
  • Electrolytic capacitors should be installed in some kind of housing. In the event of failure, they explode and scatter in different directions.
