Many people have heard the word "apocalypse" in their lives, but not everyone understands its meaning. Some believe that this expression is somehow connected with the end of the world. But what is the apocalypse really?

Meanings of the word

In some dictionaries this term is translated as "the end of the world". This is a portable meaning, so to speak - modern.

The original word translated from Greek(apokalypsis), literally means "discovery," "revelation," or "disclosure." This word has a biblical origin. For example, one of the books of the Bible (New Testament) is called Revelation, and its second name is the Apocalypse. And this name is quite understandable, since it reveals a vision, describes the miracles that preceded the Second Coming of Jesus on earth from heaven. Also in the "Apocalypse" are prophecies about the end of the world, hence, apparently, the modern meaning of the word arose.

Because there are a lot of prophecies and symbols in the book of Revelation in order to explain something incomprehensible and imaginative, the definition of "apocalyptic" began to be used.

Another modern meaning is synonymous with the word"chaos," this is some sort of catastrophe of universal scale. For example: "It is impossible to imagine anything more terrible than infanticide, and for me personally such horrors repeating themselves over and over again - this is a harbinger of the apocalypse."
