A device that helps you navigate thelocate the right road on the map and get out of the forest if you get lost. Compass. Of course, its practical use is directly proportional to the ability to use this device. Let's talk about how to properly use the compass so that this device is not a simple keychain in your pocket.

Compass: Highlights

  1. With the help of the compass parts of the world are determined: north, south, west, east.
  2. The compass needle always points to the north. If the arrows are two, then the "northern" arrow is usually marked in blue, or it is shorter, or it is the part with the end in the form of an arrow.
  3. On the compass there is a so-called "brake" - a lever that prevents the movement of the arrow.
  4. When using a compass, put it on your palm and hold it horizontally so that the arrow does not touch the glass or the compass base and do not get lost.
  5. A compass may give incorrect information about the location of parts of the light if you are near power lines.
  6. Periodically check the reliability of the compass (in the manner specified below).
  7. After each time using the compass, place it on the "brake".

Compass: check

Before using the compass, you should check its performance, otherwise you run the risk of not only getting off the road, but also not finding your way back.

  • To check, place the compass on a horizontal surface, wait until the arrow stops moving.
  • Bring a metal object to the compass and wait for the arrow to begin to change position.
  • After sharp remove the object and follow the arrow if it returned to its original position - the compass works well and can be used for orientation.

Compass in a hike: rules of use

Let's turn to the conversation, how to use the compass in the forest.

  • To begin with, we determine the landmark, the place, towhich we will return. As a guideline, it is better to choose a road, a clearing, railway tracks, a river, that is, something long enough to surely not miss and get to a familiar place.
  • Leaving better at a right angle from the landmark, that is, perpendicular to it.
  • Let's assume our landmark is the road. We leave slightly to the side we need and turn our faces to the road.
  • We remove the compass from the "brake" and, holding it exactly horizontally, rotate the compass until the arrow coincides with the north-south line (S-N, do not confuse: N-north-north; S-south-south).
  • We draw a mental line (you can attachline, straight branch) of our path. We look at the numbers at the edges of the bulb - they are degrees. We calculate the degree from zero (north) clockwise. This is the point of return (azimuth).
  • Next, look at the figure from the opposite side - this is the direction of our movement.
  • We remember both numbers! We go into the forest.

We return back:

  • We take the compass on the palm, so that the return line mentally passes through the center and the digit - the azimuth point (see above), the line should be directed forward.
  • Then start to rotate around its axis, reaching the position of the arrow at the north mark.
  • Then we go to the side, where the look is directed.

If you are still a beginner and do not know how to use the compass, video clips on the Internet will allow you to get visual information. The main thing is practice. But to practice better with knowledgeable people nearby.
