How to pull the handbrake?

Handle, and it will be more correct to say manualparking brake, must securely lock the rear wheels of the car during parking. About how you can independently adjust the handbrake, we will tell on the example of the car VAZ 2109 (in other VAZ models adjustment is the same way).

How to adjust the parking brake

The operating principle of the handbrake

The principle of parking brake operation is quiteSimple: a special steel cable connects the rear brake pads of the car with the brake handle in a special way. When the handle is lifted up, the cable is pulled - as a result, the pads are pressed against the drums and the wheels are locked.

When is it necessary to pull the cable of the handbrake?

Over time, the pad surfacewear out, they thin out, and in order to keep the pads tightly attached to the drums, the cable has to be tightened more and more. Then comes a time when, even with the handle fully lifted, the hand lever still can not hold the car on the slope. In this case, you must immediately immediately pull the cable handle.

To prevent this from happening, the manufacturer recommends checking the condition of the handbrake every 30 000 km of the car and promptly pulling the cable as necessary.

How to properly pull the handle: instruction

Correctly adjusted brake in4-5 clicks the position to securely hold the car on the slope at 25%. If the machine rolls down from the hill with the brake handle raised, the cable must be pulled up. However, pulling the handle, you can not go to the other extreme: it is inadmissible to over tighten the cable. The stroke of the brake lever must not be less than 2 clicks of the ratchet device, otherwise the handbrake will prevent the rear wheels from spinning while the machine is moving.

  1. Drive the car onto the overpass or put it in the garage on the inspection pit.
  2. If your "nine" is old, released before 1995, then before you start pulling the cable, lift the handle of the handbrake one or two clicks.
  3. Armed with two spanners on "13" and pliers and get under the car.
  4. On its bottom, closer to the rear of the machine, find the mechanism for adjusting the handbrake.
  5. In order to be able to changetension the cable, loosen the lock nut of the tensioner first - in the tightened position it securely locks the adjusting nut and does not allow it to turn.
  6. To release the locknut, hold the adjusting nut in place with one key, and twist the counter at the same time.
  7. Now, holding the pliers with the pliers, begin to tighten the adjusting nut. Tighten it until you get the correct tension of the cable.
  8. When the cable is tightened, check the degree of itstension. Get out from under the car, sit in the car's cabin and make sure that the stroke of the handbrake lever is between two and four clicks of the ratchet device. Note: for older "nines", released earlier in 1995, the range of the runner is slightly larger - from 2 to 5 or 6 clicks.
  9. If you did everything correctly, go down under the machine and tighten the lock nut well.
