How do I check the gearbox?

Buying car with hands or in the cabin, you needbe able to determine whether its main nodes and systems are operational. In addition to the engine and the braking system, this is of course the gearbox of your car. Let's talk about how to check the gearbox. Let's start with the mechanical (MKPP), and then describe the process of checking the automatic transmission (automatic transmission).

How to check the manual transmission

First of all, check if thetransfer. The inclusion must take place without additional effort, easily and smoothly, and there should be no audible sounds: rattling, knocking, crackling. If you hear such sounds, trying to "stuck" this or that transmission, then the MKPP is faulty and requires repair. I had a case where the box worked perfectly, and I decided to give my acquaintance the right to buy, but still, just in case, decided to check again how the rear gear on the car turns on. And the instinct did not disappoint: if the first time she stuck with a slight pressure, then in the second and did not turn on.

The problem had to be solved like this: put the lever MKPP in a neutral position, releasing the clutch, then again squeeze the clutch and try to engage the rear gear. It is clear that during maneuvering this takes time and is extremely inconvenient.

Further I would like to draw your attention to the fact, that the included transmissions should in no case "fly out". What does it mean? After you have switched on this or that transmission, after a while after the beginning (continuation) of the movement, you suddenly notice that the shift lever has returned to the neutral position. On the serviceable manual, such a "loss of gear" should not happen in any case.

Finally, pay attention to the condition and amount of oil in the manual. The oil condition should be such that there should not be any foreign inclusions (particles or even separate objects).

I told you about the initial test, which will helpyou will identify obvious malfunctions, if any. Of course, the gearbox can also have some minor defects, which can be detected only by specialists using the appropriate equipment. However, as a rule, a primary check is enough to not experience problems with the manual for the next 2-3 years (of course, with proper operation). Well, now let's talk about the automatic transmission - automatic transmission.

How to check the automatic transmission

As for the automatic transmission, it is best to begin withcheck the oil in the box. First of all, pay attention to the color of the oil: the new one is red, and the old one is brown. If the oil is almost black, then this indicates that it has not changed for a very long time and the previous owner did not follow the car properly. Also pay attention to the oil level in the automatic transmission. Next, do not be too lazy to drive a car and see how various transmissions on the box behave - whether there are any hiccups when turning on, jerks, extraneous sounds.

Jolts and extraneous noises indicate that, that there are some malfunctions in the automatic transmission. Especially it is worth to be alarmed when, when choosing a transmission, one can hear beatings - this indicates a strong deterioration of the automatic transmission, and in this case it is worthwhile to think about finding another machine to buy. However, I would not recommend buying a car even if minor defects are found. Especially it concerns those cases when the new owner plans to exploit the vehicle quite intensively - small defects have the property of imperceptibly turning into major breakdowns, the elimination of which will require fairly solid financial investments.

Additional tips

Next I would like to say more about this: even if you tested the transmission (it does not matter, manual or automatic transmission) and did not notice anything suspicious, I advise you to check it in the case and with a well warmed up engine, as some faults manifest themselves only after some time. And more: do not believe the seller who assures you that individual noises are a distinguishing feature of a particular model. Remember: a working gearbox in any (I emphasize - any) machine should work smoothly, without the slightest jolts and extraneous sounds.
