The word "province" in translation from the Latin language ("provincia") means "controlled territories". In ancient Rome, so called conquered territory, under the rule of Rome.

Today other meanings of the word are used. So, in a general sense, a province is a territory or a locality that is located far from the main center (for example, Moscow) and does not have independence. People living in this area are called provincials.

It is interesting that the word "province" has athe symbol of backwardness, stagnation. Often the word in this sense has a negative connotation: "What do you want in this city? It's a hole, a province ..." (A. Strugatsky, B. Strugatsky "Picnic on the Roadside").

In Russia in the 18th century, as well as in someother countries to this day, provinces are called units of administrative-territorial division, endowed with a whole range of important functions of management and management.
