The battalion commander is an acronym, that is, an abbreviation ofcombination "battalion commander" or "battery commander". The word "battalion commander" is used to determine the service category or the person holding the position. This category of military hierarchy appeared in 1918-1935 in the Red Army. This position is equivalent to the commander of a division of an air squadron or a ship of the third rank. Known is the eponymous shot of the Soviet photographer Max Alpert, depicting the company commander in the Great Patriotic War.
