What is a pilaster?

Pilaster is a decorative element in architecture. Historians believe that the pilasters owe their appearance to the architects of Ancient Greece. In literal translation from the Latin language, the word "pilaster" means "pillar" or "column". However, this translation is not entirely true. So what is a pilaster, and what is its difference from the columns?

Purpose pilasters
