Engine power expresses the attitude of workmechanism to the time interval of its commission. The standard unit for measuring engine power is "horsepower" (1 hp = 736 watts). The value of the maximum power is often reached at 5600 revolutions, committed by the crankshaft in a minute. To find out what engine power your car has without carrying out calculations is simple, since it is the maximum power value that is indicated when describing the parameters for the engine's power of the car. Note that the maximum power and the maximum torque are achieved both at different engine speeds and at different speeds.

To calculate the powerengines there are not only various units of measurement, but also different methods of measurement, which show different results. The standard is the method of measuring the power in kilowatts, which is adopted in Europe. If the power is indicated in the horsepower, then in different countries the measurement methods will differ (despite the fact that the same horsepower will be calculated). In Japan and the US they use their standards for determining engine horsepower, however, they have long been unified with others.

How to know the power of an auto engine

So, in America and Japan two types of indicators are used: net and gross.

  1. Net measurement. By measuring the net engine power (from English netto, net) is understood the bench test of the car engine, which is equipped with all the auxiliary and necessary units of the vehicle: a fan, a generator, a silencer, etc.
  2. Gross measurement. Under the measurement of gross engine power (from English brutto, gross) is understood the bench test of the engine, which is not equipped with all the additional units necessary for the operation of the vehicle: a silencer, a cooling system pump, a generator,

The gross power indicator can give a valuemore net power data by 10-20% or more. This discrepancy was successfully used by North American car manufacturers, indicating overestimated power ratings of engines, until in 1972 a new federal standard was established.

Calculation of engine power

For gross and net indicators, one value of "effective power" is characteristic: Reff is an indicator of the measured installed engine power.

Engine power: Рприв = Рэфф × К, where Рприв - recalculated for a certain reference state (reduced) power,

K is the correction factor.
