The Great Post is the most important and ancient multi-day fast. How long is Lent?
The Orthodox
Great Lent consists of the first forty days(The fourth month) and the pre-Easter week (Holy Week). They are divided by the Palm Sunday (Lazareva) Sabbath and the Palm Sunday (Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem). Thus, the duration of Lent is 48 days (seven weeks), the Post itself consists of four parts:
- 40 days -
- 1 day - Lazareva Saturday
- 1 day - Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem
- 6 days - Holy Week
The Catholics
Fasting lasts 6 weeks and 4 more days, which is40 days, but it starts in 46 days. before Easter. The bottom line is that the Catholic fast excludes Sundays; "Falling out" of the days of fasting and they postpone its start 6 days ago.
