How to read knitting patterns?

Many patterns for knitting are presented inform of schemes. In this case, the description of the sequence of loops may not be, so it is useful to learn how to read knitting patterns with knitting needles. Beginners will find this difficult, but with time obscure designations will become meaningful and it will be easier to cope with knitting.

Rules for reading the chart for knitting

To learn how to read knitting patterns, you need to familiarize yourself with the basic rules:

  • Each cell in the circuit is a separate loop, one row of cells is a series of loops, which should be tied with knitting needles.
  • The pattern is read from the bottom up. Face rows are executed from right to left, purl - from left to right.
  • If only the front rows are indicated in the diagram, then the purlins are knitted according to the pattern, that is, the facial knitting from the front one is sewn, the corresponding loop is made from the wrong one.
  • On the right side of the pattern, the numbers of the front rows are usually indicated, on the left - the purses.

Legend of loops

In knitting there are common denotations of loops. If you learn them, then you can freely read any schemes. Here they are:

  • The face loop is represented as a cross.
  • A sewn loop is a diamond or a dot.
  • A black triangle is two loops, together bound by purl.
  • The nakid is represented as a mug.
  • Rectangular triangle (the angle is directed to the right) - two loops, tied together face.
  • Rectangular triangle with an angle directed to the left - remove one loop, tie the second facial and stretch through the first one.
  • White squares are loops of garter stitch, that is, a row of facial, a series of purl alternate.
  • Equilateral non-colored triangle - remove the loop and tie through it the next two, tied together face.
