Tuya is an ornamental coniferous plant thatbelongs to the cypress family. It is noteworthy that it has flat shoots of beautiful green all year round. The homeland is Asia and North America, from where it migrated to Europe. It is also adapted to the climate of Russia, but it does not like severe frosts and direct sunlight, therefore it needs shelter for the winter.

We cover it for the winter

The plant needs special attention in the first yearlife. The roots of the thuja go deep into the ground, so it tolerates frosts rather well, but this does not concern the fragile and poorly adhering seedlings. Therefore, it is necessary to cover the thuja, especially if the winter is too little and cold. In the coldest regions of Russia, thuju must be insulated every winter in order to preserve the plant. So, let's figure out how to hide thuja and provide the plant with more or less comfortable conditions.

  1. The youngest shoots of thuya can be covered with a trimmed five-liter bottle, and sprinkled with sawdust from above or put several branches of spruce.
  2. For a plant this variant is more suitable: First, you need to make a package of several layers of fabric, gauze or covering material. Wrap a few times and fix the fabric on top with a stapler or rope, and wind the trunk of the plant with a rope in several places to protect it from frost and sunlight. Do not use non-woven materials, such as lutrasil or agrotex, since they adversely affect the condition of thuja during the thaw. Also, you can not use burlap and strongly pull the tree with a rope.
  3. If you want to make the shelter for the Tui more reliable, you can build a wooden frame on which the protective material is fastened.
  4. Still need to insulate the roots of thuja, to do this, put a thick layer of sawdust and spruce lapnik under the thuja.
