Activated carbon is a medicinal product,used in medicine for many years. Virtually every person in the home medicine cabinet has a couple of packages of these pills, but not everyone knows how to drink activated carbon.

Indications for use:

Coal can be used in the following cases:
  • When poisoning with various substances of chemical origin (including drugs, alkaloids, salts of heavy metals);
  • When food poisoning;
  • In cases where the metabolism is disturbed (but strictly according to the doctor's indications);
  • In cases where after chemotherapy or radiotherapy there is an intoxication of the body (poisoning with toxic substances);
  • With increased gas generation;
  • When rotting processes take place in the gastrointestinal tract (hereinafter - the gastrointestinal tract);
  • With chronic and acute viral hepatitis;
  • With abstinence syndrome (usually after drinking alcohol or alcoholism).

There are also cases when activated charcoal is contraindicated:

  • Hypersensitivity or individual intolerance;
  • With stomach ulcer, duodenal ulcer;
  • With bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract;
  • With nonspecific ulcerative colitis;
  • In case of poisoning - if a different antidote is prescribed, then it is not worth using activated charcoal, because it can remove the antidote instead of poisons.

How to drink activated carbon: recommended doses:

It is recommended to use inside in the form of tablets,with water, or in the form of an aqueous mixture (crushed coal + water) 1 tablet of activated carbon (0.25 grams) for every 10 kg of human weight. Drink tablets 1 hour before meals, 3-4 times a day. Use activated charcoal should be no more than 14 consecutive days (if the disease is chronic), and no more than 3-5 days for acute diseases. If necessary, at the appointment of a doctor, it is possible to repeat the course after 2 weeks.

The following dosage is recommended for children:

  • less than 1 year - 1-2 tablets. in a day;
  • from 1 to 2 years - 4 tab. in a day;
  • more than 2 years - 4-6 tab. in a day.

In difficult cases, acute poisoning may wash the stomach with a suspension of activated charcoal. Doses are set by the attending physician.

Side effects are not common, but they(and can appear if the activated charcoal is incorrectly taken): this is a change in the stool (especially if you use a laxative together with activated charcoal), hypovitaminosis, lowering blood pressure, hypoglycemia, hypothermia, hypocalcemia. And remember, each organism is individual, therefore it is better that the course of use of any medicine is set by the doctor. Be healthy!
