Vitebsk is located in the north-east of Belarus, ineastern part of the Vitebsk region. It is located near the Western Dvina River. A notable feature of this city is that it is one of the oldest cities in Belarus. At the same time, Vitebsk is a fairly large administrative center. Also, the city is of considerable geological interest. There are such mountains as Uspenskaya, Dukhovskaya, Yuryeva Gorka, Ostra Mogila and others.
According to the chronicles, Vitebsk was foundedaround 1100 AD. Since that moment the city has undergone many changes. In the middle of the 16th century the city became the Vitebsk province. It served many soldiers and recruits.
Now Vitebsk is not onlyadministrative, but also the cultural center of Belarus. The city has a healthcare system, there are research institutes, five higher educational institutions (Vitebsk State University named after PM Masherov, Vitebsk State Technological University, etc.), a theological seminary.
Vitebsk often hosts festivals, the most famous of which is the Slavic Bazaar.
Also in this city is quite well developedindustry. In particular, there are more than 300 enterprises of machine-building, light industry, food industry, production of electrical appliances, construction materials.
