Dialogue (Greek conversation) is a form of oral or written exchange of remarks between two or more people. Usually this word is explained as a conversation, which is etymologically true.

In the Dictionary of the Ephraim, the dialogue is a sequence of interrelated speech acts of two or more participants, each of which becomes the addressee of speech, then the speaker.

In Ushakov's Explanatory Dictionary another interpretation of the word "dialogue" is given - it is part of a literary work consisting of conversations.

In the Explanatory Dictionary of Foreign Language Words, the dialogue has the obsolete significance of a literary work written in the form of a conversation.

Dialogue is used as a literary and philosophical device, and also as a theological and social tool.

Types of dialogue

There are several types of dialogue: conversation, argument and discussion:

  1. In the conversation, its participants exchange views and expand the understanding of the object of the conversation, having similar views, from which a friendly or tolerant attitude towards each other follows.
  2. In the dispute, its participants have oppositeopinions, where everyone wants to win only their position. Sometimes the dispute develops into a form of interaction that does not resemble a conversation (for example, in a fight), because of the reluctance of some participants to accept the views of others.
  3. The discussion is considered, compared andthe views of participants on serious issues are assessed. As a rule, several people take part in the discussion, who adhere to an intelligent form of communication.

How to conduct a conversation is how to conduct a dialogue.
