What is a laser?
A huge number of words in various subjectsgives us the confidence to say that we have a good command of our own language. But as we get to know new terms, we learn more and more words. So, today we will consider the meaning of the word "laser".
What is a laser? The laser is an installation for converting energy sources (light, heat, electricity, etc.) into a narrowly directed flow. This phenomenon is based on the principle of induced radiation. The essence of this process is that unlike spontaneous emission, where photons have different chaotic directions, in this case photons are coherent.
To create such an environment, the active medium pumping systems are used. They are optical, electrical and others.
Where applicable
Due to their unique properties, lasers are widely used in a wide variety of industries.
- In science they are used in spectroscopy, optics, space navigation;
- In metrology, lasers are used to measure distance, time, velocity, temperature, density, pressure and many other quantities;
- In surgery, cosmetology and ophthalmology, lasers serve as scalpels;
- For military purposes, lasers are means of aiming;
- In everyday life, they are used in record players, printers, readers, and so on.
As we see, lasers have firmly entered our life, and the scope of this invention is expanding. You may also be interested in other terms in the Definitions section.
