Why does not the starter rotate?
Unfortunately, such an important automobile unit as a starter is inclined to refuse at the most inopportune moment. Why does not the starter rotate? Consider the most common faults.
The traction relay did not work, the anchor does not rotate. Causes.
- Defective or discharged battery;
- pole terminals of wire and battery terminals were oxidized;
- the tips are slightly tightened;
- there was a break or disconnection of the traction relay wires;
- interturn closure of the winding of the traction relay occurred;
- jams the traction relay;
- the contact part of the switch is faulty.
Why does not the starter work if the traction relay has worked, but there is no rotation or it is weak. Causes.
- The battery is worn out;
- pole terminals of wire or battery terminals were oxidized;
- The tightening on the bolts of the traction relay was loosened;
- the collector was burnt;
- the brushes were hanging;
- the winding of the armature or stator was cut off;
- The insulated brush of the positive brush was closed to "mass";
- there was a shortage between the collector plates;
- In the stator winding or armature, an interturn closure occurred.

- The free-wheel clutch slips;
- The clutch release lever has broken;
- the collar ring of the coupling has broken;
- on the screw thread of the anchor shaft of the starter, the drive is either jammed or tightly moved;
After starting the engine, the starter does not turn off. Causes.
- Seizes the drive lever;
- there was a sticking of contacts on the traction relay or the drive on the shaft jams;
- the return spring of the ignition switch is broken;
- the return springs of the traction relay or the freewheel clutch of the starter are loose or broken;
- the traction relay jam.
In the situation, if the engine wound up, but the starter did not turn off, the possible cause of the malfunction is its skew. Bolts of fastening of a starter to the engine need to be tightened.
Increased noise of the starter. Causes.
- Worn sleeve sleeves for the anchor shaft or bearings;
- fastening of starter;
- damaged teeth of the crown on the engine flywheel or teeth on the drive gear;
- on the drive side the cover is broken;
- in the case of the starter, the pole fixation has weakened - when the armature is tilted, the pole touches.
Correction of malfunctions of a starter
Scuffs and scratches on the anchor are eliminated by grindingor sweep. Shaft of the shaft under the bearings is restored by chrome plating or by remaining. If the wear is small, it can be eliminated by rolling with further grinding. Damaged outer and interturn isolation in the windings is changed to a new one, the winding itself is rewound. Oxidized and burnt contacts are sandpapered. The pasted contacts change to new ones. Damage to the covers: wear of brushes, loss of elasticity brush holders or their breakage, fences, cracks, closures - everything must be repaired. Worn bearings change to new ones, splints and cracks are welded, brush holders are insulated.
