Often, when talking about TV shows, they use the word "sitcom", but not everyone knows what exactly this word means.

What is a sitcom?

The term "sitcom" was formed by reducingword combinations "situational comedy". The genre of situational comedies include television and radio programs that have permanent characters and a permanent place of action.

This genre appeared in the 1920s onradio, but by the 1970s it had become one of the most popular genres on television. Therefore now under the word "sitcom" most often mean a certain type of television series.

Features of the sitcom

The traditional time of one series of sitcom is 20-30minutes. The series is almost not related to each other in a plot, in each new series a new amusing situation from the life of the heroes is played out. Usually sitcoms have a very large number of series, during which a significant part of the life of the characters passes. The first sitcoms were filmed in the studios where the audience was invited, so one of the features of sitcoms is voiceover.

There are only a few main places in the sitcoms- most often this is the residence and work of the main characters. All action takes place there. The characters of the sitcom do not change during the whole series. One of the most beloved youth of sitcoms is the popular television series "Friends", which has been on the screen for more than 10 years.
