What were the first computers?

The history of the appearance of the computer goes deepcenturies. If we talk about computer technology, then the very first device for the account is Chinese suan-pan. Next, you can see an ancient Greek abacus made of wood. Pebbles and sand were instruments of account. Later the device was brought to "mind" by the Romans, replacing the material with marble and starting to use marble balls.

When was the first computer created?

In 1642, Blaise Pascal invented the first countablecar, and later, in 1673, Leibniz created a prototype of future arithmometers. His machine was able to perform simple actions - addition, multiplication, subtraction, division.

Charles Babbage developed the idea of creatingcomputer, which should work on the basis of the program. But the possibilities of the technique of his time (and was 1823) was not enough to realize this idea. Although attempts have been made for 70 years. Details can be found in the article Who invented the computer.

Only a century later (in the 40s of the 20th century) we developed a machine based on the program.

The first computer (electronic computer) was created in 1946 by American scientists. One of them is John von Neumann, thanks to which the "stuffing" of modern computers includes:

  • CPU;
  • an input-output device;
  • arithmetic device;
  • memory for data storage.

This computer was called "Eniak". In parallel, work on the creation of computers was successfully conducted in England and the USSR (MESM and BESM).

The first computers: their appearance and further development

What were these first computers? Very unlike the modern options - they were just huge. There were a lot of electronic tubes working in them, and a large room was assigned to one car. It's hard to imagine, is not it?

The dimensions of computers have decreased since 1948, when the first transistors appeared. In 1965 the first mini-computer was released. This is the merit of Digital.

In 1958 Jack Kilby came up with a way to place several transistors on one semiconductor plate. In 1959, Robert Noyce further improved this method. So the integrated circuits were created, on which for the first time in 1968 the computer PDP-8 was released. Then the computer firm Intel started selling chips.

Since that time, computers have becomemore compact, more powerful. Where else will their progress go? You will learn a lot of curious about these machines and their work by looking in the special section of Computers.
