Lake Natron
This is a small lake in the north of Tanzania, no more than3 meters in depth, has a ph level of 9-10.5. Its temperature reaches 60 degrees, and the concentration of minerals in the compartment with alkalinity makes its water viscous. Sometimes this lake looks like an ordinary dirty pond. But when a significant part of the water evaporates and the concentration of the mineral is increased, the bacteria activate and the water turns red.
Water is stained with halophilic cyanobacteria
Often the lake is covered with hydrochloric crust
Live in such water can only bacteria and a special kind of fish - alkaline body
A poisonous lake protects pink flamingos from predators, so they nest on salt islands during the mating period
The rest of the animals, getting into the lake, die quickly
Because of the concentration of natron their bodies are mineralized
And turn into petrified statues
The first to capture these statues was photographer Nick Brandt
For the photo, he arranged the remains so that it seemed as if they were alive
Terribly unusual, and just creepy
Here are a few more positive photos
