How to keep onions?
Safely store onions (both green and onions, as well as leeks) in fresh form can be not only in a private house, where there is a cellar or cellar, but also in a regular apartment.
We will tell you how.
Preparation of onions
Because different varieties manifest themselves differentlyduring storage, you should initially separate the bulbs of different species. So, the bitter and sharp varieties of onions are much more tolerant of long-term storage, while the sweet onions are very unstable to diseases, and therefore it needs to be given more attention. In addition, it is desirable that the bulbs of the same size are stored together.
Thoroughly inspect each bulb - they shouldbe ripe, without damages and dents, scales should be intact. And of course, the onion should be perfectly dry, otherwise it will rot. For this, the stocks are carefully dried before being sent for storage. It is most convenient to do this on a shell net - it will perfectly pass the air and will not require you to participate in the process (you will not need to turn the bow often).
We store in the cellar
Optimal conditions for storage of onions in the basement / cellar assume a temperature of 0-3 degrees and humidity at 75-90 percent.
It will be most convenient to fold the onions into smallboxes with holes for ventilation. To protect the onion from moisture, sprinkle it with chalk (between layers). For 10 kg of onions, 200 g of chalk will suffice. If the humidity in the room is within the norm, then the onion can simply be poured with husk - it will not allow the stocks to dry up. If the humidity is increased, then you will have to use additional elements to reduce it. For example, you can place in the room where the onions are stored, containers with wood shavings or ash, lime - these substances have excellent absorbing properties.
In this case, the height of the onion layers should not exceed 35 cm, otherwise ventilation will be difficult.
Periodically, sort out the onions (for example, 1-1.5 timesmonth), because even the smallest foulbrood in time is able to spoil the entire box of winter stocks. If bulbs for some reason have become damp, they will need to be removed and thoroughly dried, then sent back to storage.
You can also lay onions on the shelves. Only then one layer will be enough and the bulbs will have to be turned over periodically.
We store in apartment
To maintain the onions in good condition in your apartment, ensure the temperature is not more than 18-22 degrees and humidity is not more than 50-70 degrees.
To keep onions at home, take care of the storage container. It is best to use nets, stockings. They need to be stored in a suspended state (for example, in a pantry) so that ventilation is as good as possible.
If you do not want the onion to germinate, trimovergrown roots of bulbs, and then treat the cut sites with calcareous paste. You can buy it, for example, in a construction shop or in a store with goods for agriculture. Just keep in mind that in the spring you will not be able to grow green feathers from such bulbs.
How to store green onions and leeks?
To make stocks of spring onions for the winter, itsit will be necessary to sort out by removing the damaged feathers, rinse and thoroughly dry. After this, the onion can either be ground or left in its original state. Next, put the feathers in plastic containers or special frosting bags and place them in the freezer. In this form, the onion can lie very, very long, preserving its useful properties, taste qualities.
If you need to keep the onions for 7-10 days, you should wash it well, dry it and then put it in plastic bags or wrap it in a towel and place it in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.
If it is a leek, then you need to keep itexclusively in the refrigerator - the temperature and humidity presented there are optimal for him. Store in the vegetable section of the refrigerator this grade can for 4-5 months. When you see a dry peel, do not worry: if you remove it, you will find all the same fresh and juicy center. In a private house, leeks can be stored in the basement. To do this, it will need to be placed (vertically) in a container of sand.
